Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) have developed surveillance definitions for health care-associated infection (HCAI) and specific types of infections in health care settings. An infection of the female genital other than endometritis or a vaginal cuff infection can be diagnosed if certain findings are present.


 

Criteria for the diagnosis of infection of the female genital tract – one or more of the following:

(1) pathogens cultured from from tissue or fluid from the affected area

(2) abscess or other sign of infection seen at surgery on the female genital tract

(3) abscess or other sign of infection seen on histopathologic examination of tissue or fluid from the female genital tract

(4) all of the following:

(4a) two or more of the following:

(4a1) fever (> 38°C)

(4a2) nausea

(4a3) vomiting

(4a4) pelvic pain

(4a5) pelvic tenderness

(4a6) dysuria

(4b) one or more of the following

(4b1) physician diagnosis of an infection

(4b2) positive blood culture

(4c) no other explanation for the findings

 

Exclusions:

(1) endometritis (EMET)

(2) vaginal cuff infections (VCUF)
