Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) have developed surveillance definitions for health care-associated infection (HCAI) and specific types of infections in health care settings. Oomphalitis of a newborn can be diagnosed if certain findings are present.

Patient selection: newborn <= 30 days of age

Criteria for the diagnosis of oomphalitis – one or both of the following:

(1) both erythema and purulence at the umbilicus

(2) both of the following:

(2a) erythema and/or serous discharge from the umbilicus

(2b) one or both of the following:

(2b1) positive culture for micro-organisms from drainage or needle aspirate

(2b2) positive blood culture for micro-organisms

An infection that occurs in the hospital or within 7 days after hospital discharge should be considered to be health care associated.

An infection related to an umbilical vascular catheter should be classified as VASC.
