Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) have developed surveillance definitions for health care-associated infection (HCAI) and specific types of infections in health care settings. An eye infection other than conjunctivitis can be diagnosed if certain findings are present.


 

Criteria for the diagnosis of an eye infection other than conjunctivitis – one or more of the following:

(1) pathogens cultured from the anterior and/or posterior chamber

(2) pathogens cultured from the viteous fluid

(3) all of the following:

(3a) two or three of the following:

(3a1) eye pain

(3a2) visual disturbance

(3a3) hypopyon

(3b) one or more of the following

(3b1) physician diagnosis of an eye infection

(3b2) positive antigen test on the blood for Hemophilus influenze, Streptococcus pneumoniae, other

(3b3) positive blood culture

(3c) no other explanation for the findings
