Description

Chemical fumigants can be helpful in controlling pests. A number of precautions need to be taken to protect workers who may be exposed.

General recommendations:

(1) The agents used as a fumigant should be known and the data sheets available.

(2) Fumigant levels in the air should be monitored.

A worker should only enter the area if either:

(1) he or she is wearing appropriate personal protective equipment

(2) the area has been adequately aerated to safe levels

Aeration requires:

(1) adequate time

(2) proper stacking for good airflow

(3) packaging that does not absorb a fumigant or retain it
