Description

Soft tissue infections include necrotizing fasciitis, infectious myositis, lymphadenitis, and lymphangitis. Diagnosis is made by meeting one of the following criteria.


 

Criteria 1: organism isolated from culture of tissue or drainage from affected site

 

Criteria 2: purulent drainage from affected site

 

Criteria 3: at least one of the following:

(1) abscess or other evidence of infection seen during surgery

(2) abscess or other evidence of infection seen by histopathologic examination

 

Criteria 4 - both of the following:

(1) at least 2 of the following at affected site:

(1a) localized pain or tenderness (dolor)

(1b) swelling

(1c) redness (rubor)

(1d) heat (calor)

(2) at least one of the following:

(2a) organism isolated from blood culture

(2b) positive antigen test on blood or urine

(2c) diagnostic IgM antibody titer on serum for pathogen

(2d) fourfold increase in IgG antibody titer in paired serum samples for pathogen
