Description

Infections of the sinuses can be diagnosed by specific criteria.


 

Criteria 1: organism isolated from culture of purulent material obtained from sinus cavity

 

Criteria 2 - both of the following:

(1) one of the following:

(1a) fever (> 38° C)

(1b) pain or tenderness over the involved sinus

(1c) headache

(1d) purulent exudates

(1e) nasal obstruction

(2) at least one of the following

(2a) positive transillumination

(2b) radiographic evidence of infection
