Description

Otitis media indicates infection of the middle ear. Diagnosis can be made by meeting one of the following two criteria.


 

Criteria 1 - at least one of the following:

(1) pathogen isolated from culture of fluid from middle ear obtained by tympanocentesis

(2) pathogen isolated from culture of fluid from middle ear obtained at surgery

 

Criteria 2 - 2 or more of the following:

(1) fever (> 38° C)

(2) pain in the eardrum

(3) inflammation

(4) retraction of eardrum

(5) decreased motility of eardrum

(6) fluid behind eardrum
