Description

The organs of the urinary tract and the tissue surrounding them can become infected independent of or associated with urinary infections.


 

Sites potentially affected:

(1) kidney

(2) ureter

(3) urinary bladder

(4) tissue surrounding the retroperitoneal or perinephric spaces

 

Symptoms in patients > 12 months of age:

(1) fever (> 38°C)

(2) localized pain at affected site

(3) tenderness at affected site

 

Symptoms in patients <= 12 months of age:

(1) fever (> 38°C)

(2) hypothermia (< 37°C)

(3) apnea

(4) bradycardia

(5) lethargy

(6) vomiting

 

Criteria 1:

(1) organism isolated from culture of fluid (other than urine) or tissue from affected site

 

Criteria 2:

(1) abscess or other evidence of infection seen on direct examination, during surgery or by histopathologic examination

 

Criteria 3 - all of the following:

(1) age > 12 months

(2) at least 2 symptom for age > 12 months

(3) at least one of the following:

(3a) purulent drainage from affected site

(3b) organism isolated from blood culture

(3c) radiographic evidence of infection

(3d) physician's diagnosis

(3e) physician institutes appropriate antimicrobial therapy

 

Criteria 4 - all of the following:

(1) age <= 12 months

(2) at least 1 symptom for age <= 12 months

(3) at least one of the following:

(3a) purulent drainage from affected site

(3b) organism isolated from blood culture

(3c) radiographic evidence of infection

(3d) physician's diagnosis

(3e) physician institutes appropriate antimicrobial therapy
