Description

The diagnosis of infection involving bone can be made by consideration of clinical, laboratory and radiographic evidence.


 

Criteria 1:

(1) organism cultured from bone

 

Criteria 2 - one of the following:

(1) evidence of osteomyelitis seen during surgery

(2) evidence of osteomyelitis by histopathologic examination

 

Criteria 3 - all of the following:

(1) at least two symptoms: fever (> 38 °C), localized swelling at suspected site of infection, tenderness at suspected site of infection, heat at suspected site of infection, or drainage at suspected site of infection

(2) no other recognizable cause

(3) one or more of the following:

(3a) organism isolated on blood culture

(3b) positive antigen test on blood

(3c) radiographic evidence of infection
