Description

Necrotizing enterocolitis occurring in infants can be diagnosed according to the following criteria.


 

Criteria - all of the following:

(1) age <= 12 months

(2) at least two of the following findings:

(2a) abdominal distention

(2b) vomiting

(2c) prefeeding residuals

(3) no other recognized cause for findings

(4) persistent microscopic or gross blood in stools

(5) at least one of the following:

(5a) radiographic evidence of pneumoperitoneum

(5b) radiographic evidence of pneumotosis intestinalis

(5c) radiographic evidence of unchanging, "rigid" loops of small bowel
