Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list the conditions required to ensure that transmission of dracunculiasis is contained by interrupting the release of larvae into water sources.

Conditions for transmission containment of dracunculiasis:

(1) The disease is diagnosed before the worm has emerged.

(2) The patient has not entered any water source since the worm emerged.

(3) The patient is properly managed with the manual removal of all worms.

(4) The patient is instructed not to enter the water until all worms have been completely removed and abides by the instructions.

(5) The entire process is validated by a supervisor within 7 days of a worm's emergence.
