Description

Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent that can cause caustic burns and lipid peroxidation.


 

Concentration of solution:

(1) A concentration > 10% is associated with toxic effects on direct exposure.

(2) Small children may have toxic reactions with dilute solutions.

 

Acute:

(1) mucosal burn with blistering and ulceration

(2) abdominal pain with vomiting, colitis, and gastrointestinal bleeding

(3) airway irritation with sub-epiglottic narrowing, stridor, cough, apnea, cyanosis and respiratory failure

(4) bleaching of hair

(5) skin burn with blistering

(6) hemolytic anemia

(7) myoglobinuria

(8) sinus tachycardia, cardiopulmonary arrest

(9) ocular irritation with lacrimation and corneal ulceration on eye exposure

(10) metabolic acidosis

(11) seizures and coma

(12) shock

 

Chronic:

(1) interstitial lung disease

(2) chronic skin irritation

(3) chronic mucosal irritation with hairy tongue
