Description

Rastinehad et al various conditions that can result in hematuria arising from the prostate gland. Identifying the cause is important when treating severe or persistent prostatic hematuria. The authors are from the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology (Lake Success, New York), University of Pittsburgh and Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

Causes of hematuria arising from the prostate:

(1) prostate cancer

(2) metastatic cancer

(3) benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH)

(4) radiation therapy, especially interstitial brachytherapy

(5) prostate biopsy

(6) prostate surgery, especially transurethral resection (TURP)

(7) infection

(8) lithiasis

(9) trauma

(10) vascular malformation

It is important to identify other sources of hematuria (renal, ureteral, cystic) since control of the hematuria may involve treating these as well.
