Description

Litvan et al identified clinical features that can help distinguish progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) from Parkinson's disease (PD). The authors are from NIH, Massachusetts General Hospital, Hopital de la Salpetriere (Paris), Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Clinical Neurobiology (Vienna) and the Institute of Neurology (London).

Analysis: both logistic regression and CART performed

Parameters:

(1) benefit from levodopa therapy

(2) falls during first year

no

probable PD, few PSP

Additional findings from logistic regression:

(1) tremor-dominant disease: favors Parkinson's disease

(2) unstable gait: favors PSP

(3) supranuclear vertical gaze palsy: PSP
