Description

Guo et al reported the Cardiometabolic Disease Staging System (CMDS). This can monitor an obese patient over the spectrum of cardiometabolic disease and can predict future cardiovascular disease. The authors are from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Parameters:

(1) number of risk factors (from 0 to 4)

(2) fasting glucose

(3) 2-hour glucose tolerance

(4) active cardiovascular disease (angina pectoris, S/P acute coronary artery syndrome, S/P coronary artery stent placement, S/P coronary artery bypass graft surgery, S/P thrombotic stroke, S/P peripheral arterial disease with non-traumatic amputation

Risk factors:

(1) increased waist circumference for gender (>=112 cm male, >=88 cm female)

(2) elevated blood pressure (any of the following: systolic >= 130 mm Hg, diastolic >= 85 mm Hg, on antihypertensive medications)

(3) low serum HDL-cholesterol for gender (any of the following: < 40 mg/dLor < 1 mmol/L for male, < 50 mg/dL or < 1.3 mmol/L in female, on medication)

(4) elevated fasting serum triglycerides (>=150 mg/dL or >= 1.7 mmol/L, on medication)

The Metabolic Syndrome is present when 3 or 4 of the risk factors are present.
