A car battery can explode, primarily due to a build-up of hydrogen gas.
Risk factors for car battery explosion:
(1) charging
(2) jump starting
(3) adding fluids
(4) inadequate gas venting
Hazards:
(1) acid burns from sulfuric acid
(2) chemical keratitis from acid
(3) shrapnel
(4) penetrating injury to the eye
(5) lead poisoning
(6) loss of function of the vehicle
(7) fire and thermal burn if the hydrogen gas ignites
