Description

A male may develop a Candidal infection of the penis.


 

Balanitis = inflammation of the glans penis

 

Balanoposthosis = inflammation of the glans penis and prepuce

 

Risk factors:

(1) sexual intercourse with a woman with Candidal vulvovaginitis

(2) diabetes mellitus

(3) immunosuppression

 

Clinical findings:

(1) The glans penis is pruritic.

(2) The skin may appear taut and glossy.

(3) Multiple small pustules may be present.

(4) Painful erosions may be present.

 

Laboratory findings:

(1) Scrapings show yeast forms with pseudohyphae.

(2) Positive fungal culture for a Candida species.

 

The patient should respond to appropriate topical or oral antifungal therapy. Failure to respond may indicate antifungal resistance, reinfection, noncompliance or the presence of another disorder.
