Calculating Dose Given by Body Weight or BSA

Description

Some dosage regimens give the dose by some body parameter such as body weight or body surface area. The parameter chosen often can be correlated with the blood or plasma volume, which affects the volume of distribution. The daily dosage can be divided into several doses distributed over the day.


Daily Dosing by Body Weight

 

for daily doses given in units per kilogram body weight

 

daily dose =

= (units / kg) * (patient's weight in kilograms)

 

apply limit of maximum amount per dose or per day

 

Daily Dosing by Body Surface Area

 

for daily doses given in units per meter square BSA

 

daily dose =

= (units / (meter square)) * (patient's BSA in meters squared)

 

apply limit of maximum amount per dose or per day

 

Dividing Daily Dose

 

enter divisor (number of equal doses per day) vs (schedule qd/bid/tid/etc)

 

individual dose =

= (daily dose) / (number of doses)

 

If appropriate, select nearest available dosage formulation (round up or round down).
