Description

Hot asphalt (bitumen, pitch) can cause serious burns, primarily on feet and exposed skin.

People at risk:

(1) roofers

(2) road repair workers

(3) asphalt plant workes

Risk factors for injury:

(1) temperature of the asphalt

(2) size of the skin surface that becomes covered

(3) immediate response

Hot pitch can infiltrate easily around finger and toe nails. Burns to the feet can be disabling.

The pitch becomes very adherent as it cools, making it difficult to remove. Solidified asphalt can be more easily removed by applying olive oil or butter. The exposed tissue can then be treated.
