Description

Fabacher et al developed a brief screening instrument (ED Depression Screening Instrument, or ED-DSI) for screening elderly patients in the Emergency Department for depression. A positive screen can be followed by a more targeted interview as permitted by the patient's condition. The authors are from Albany Medical College in Albany, New York.

(2) Do you often feel helpless?

(3) Do you often feel downhearted and blue?

Performance:

• sensitivity 79% with specificity 66%

• The negative predictive value was 87%.
