Description

The Brief Assessment Scale for Depression (BAS DEP) is a 21-item screening instrument for depression. It has been used primarily in the elderly, with translations into several languages.


 

The instrument consists of 21 questions.

 

Responses are no or yes, with responses indicating depression scored from 1 to 3 points.

= SUM(points for all 21 items)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 24

• The higher the score, the greater the degree of depression, with 24 indicating severe depression.

• Mann et al (1984) used a cutoff score >= 7 to indicate depressed state.
