Hemorrhage can occur into the bowel wall following death by strangulation or hanging.
Patient selection: hanging, strangulation, throttling
Sites of hemorrhage may include:
(1) stomach
(2) duodenum
(3) jejunum
(4) colon
(5) omentum
(6) rectum
The degree of hemorrhage may correlate with the duration of being suspended.
False positive hemorrhage can be seen with:
(1) coagulopathy (but would also contribute to true hemorrhage)
(2) mesenteric infarction
(3) blunt trauma
(4) hypothermia
(5) putrefaction
