Description

A blizzard is a dangerous winter storm defined by several characteristics. Being caught in a blizzard can be fatal.


 

Criteria of the National Weather Service for a blizzard:

(1) winter storm

(2) large amount of falling or blowing snow

(3) winds > 35 miles per hour

(4) visibility < 0.25 miles ("whiteout")

(5) duration >= 3 hours (an extended period)

 

A ground blizzard involves a strong wind blowing already fallen snow.

 

If some of the features are present then the storm may be referred to as a winter storm or a heavy snow.
