Description

Importation of biological items may seem harmless but it can have unexpected consequences. These consequences may include the introduction of damaging pests, exposure to serious human or animal pathogens or harm to protected species.


 

Items that should not be imported without a license or official guidance:

(1) fruits

(2) vegetables

(3) plants

(4) seeds

(5) insects

(6) snails

(7) any biological agent capable of causing disease

(8) cell cultures

(9) soils

(10) meats

(11) animals, birds, fish or reptiles

(12) wildlife products

(13) any items from farm, ranch or pasture

(14) any other prohibited item

 

A person who has visited a farm, ranch or pasture or who has been in contact with animals may need special clearance to come into a country. Clothes and shoes exposed to these areas may need to be cleaned and decontaminated.

 

Items that can usually be transported but which must be declared:

(1) prepackaged food

(2) personal pets
