Description

A prudent person should prepare for a disaster. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other government agencies recommend that everyone have a disaster kit available.


 

Predisaster planning:

(1) essential documents prepared and stored someplace safe and secure

(2) evacuation plan

(3) key phone numbers (utility company, fire department, police department, etc)

 

Supplies of a basic kit:

(1) water for at least 3 days (1 gallon per day per person)

(2) non-perishable food for at least 3 days (3 meals plus snacks per day per person)

(3) flashlight or other lighting source

(4) radio and/or weather radio

(5) first aid kit

(6) whistle and mirror for signaling

(7) dust mask for each person

(8) a roll of duct tape to seal doors and windows

(9) simple tools including those required to shut-off utilities

(10) manual can opener

(11) local maps

(12) cell phone with charging unit

(13) batteries, solar panel and/or hand crank to provide power to devices

(14) toilet paper

(15) garbage bags

(16) eating utensils and mess kit

 

Additional supplies may include:

(1) water purification

(2) tent or other shelter

(3) sleeping bags or blankets

(4) survival manual

(5) knife

(6) shovel

(7) matches and fire starting materials in waterproof containers

(8) fire extinguisher

(9) money

(10) extra clothing

(11) household chlorine bleach and soap

(12) rope and string

(13) plastic jugs or buckets

(14) saw or axe

(15) extra tools

(16) plastic sheets
