Description

An elderly patient may have a number of problems that can act as barriers to effective drug therapy.


 

Problems that can affect an elderly patient's ability to take drugs:

(1) tremor

(2) decreased range of motion

(3) problems with mobility

(4) decreased dexterity

(5) difficulty swallowing

(6) visual impairment

(7) hearing impairment

(8) cognitive impairment

(9) mental illness

(10) significant comorbid conditions

(11) susceptibility to adverse drug effects

(12) polypharmacy

(13) neglect

(14) social isolation

(15) malnutrition

(16) substance abuse

 

Tasks that may be a challenge:

(1) opening drug containers

(2) counting and handling pills

(3) putting pills in the mouth

(4) swallowing

(5) self-injection

(6) understanding or remembering instructions

(7) coordinated activities (like use of eye drops)

(8) applying creams or emollients
