Description

Changes in pressure are known to cause discomfort in divers and airplane crews. Much more common are complaints due to changes in barometric pressure.

Conditions that may be triggered by a change in barometric pressure:

(1) arthritis, especially in rheumatoid disorders

(2) headache

(3) sinusitis

(4) dental pain (barodontalgia)

(5) sites of old injury (fracture, trauma, war injuries)

Risk factors for pain or discomfort:

(1) a sudden drop in barometric pressure

(2) cold temperatures

(3) past history of being affected by the weather

A common problem is distinguishing barometric headache from a migraine headache.
