Description

Orbital myositis is a rare, inflammatory, noninfectious disorder that affects the ocular muscles. It may be idiopathic (primary) or secondary to an autoimmune disorder.

Autoimmune disorders associated with orbital myositis:

(1) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

(2) Crohn’s disease

(3) Behcet’s disease

(4) Wegener’s granulomatosis (granulomatosis with polyangiitis)

(5) sarcoidosis

(6) psoriatic arthritis

Significance of secondary orbital myositis:

(1) The patient may have signs and symptoms of disease at sites outside of the orbit..

(2) The patient may have uveitis or episcleritis.

(3) The patient may show serologic evidence of an autoantibody.

(4) Therapy with a targeted agent against the underlying autoimmune disease may be effective therapy for the orbital myositis.
