Description

Strawbridge et al studied factors associated with successful aging and well-being in the elderly. These were identified relative to a person's self-rating the level of success enjoyed. The authors are the Public Health Institute in Berkeley and the University of California in San Francisco.

Statements associated with successful aging and well-being:

(1) best old age one could expect (odds ratio 9.22, 95% CI 6.7 – 12.7)

(2) very happy (odds ratio 3.73, 95% CI 2.76 – 5.04)

(3) pleased with how life turned out (odds ratio 3.16, 95% CI 2.37 – 4.22)

(4) much more energy than others (odds ratio 3.55, 95% CI 2.55 – 4.94)

(5) enjoy free time a lot (odds ratio 4.58, 95% CI 3.29 – 6.37)

(6) excellent mental or emotional health (odds ratio 5.40, 95% CI 3.91 – 7.45)

(7) not depressed (odds ratio 3.85, 95% CI 2.28 – 6.51)

(8) very much feel loved and cared about (odds ratio 2.21, 95% CI 1.61 – 3.04)

(9) very satisfied with relationships (odds ratio 2.51, 95% CI 1.82 – 3.47)

(10) marriage has been very happy (odds ratio 1.83, 95% CI 1.30 – 2.58)

(11) rarely feel not a good spouse (odds ratio 1.64, 95% CI 1.16 – 2.32)

In the implementation, I made these statements into 5 point Likert scales covering the range of responses. I also modified the last 2 questions dealing with marriage to cover intimate friendships if the person is not married.
