Description

A patient with von Willebrand’s disease should be evaluated prior to sports participation.


 

Greater caution in sports participation should be observed for a patient with

(1) moderate or severe bleeding.

(2) a history of significant bleeding during sports participation in the past

 

The patient should avoid sports with:

(1) a high risk of trauma

(2) a risk for head injury

(3) difficult access to emergency medical care (participation in a remote location, etc)

 

The patient should avoid drugs with antiplatelet activity such as aspirin, NSAIDS and/or clopidogrel.

 

In addition the patient should maintain good nutrition to avoid vitamin C and K deficiencies
