Recognition of a person's stage can help the health care provider make appropriate interventions to further the process. These stages can be identified in a person wanting to change from a physically inactive lifestyle.


 

Stages of behavioral change (Transtheoretical Model):

(1) precontemplation

(2) contemplation

(3) preparation

(4) action

(5) maintenance.

not exercising regularly and not intending to do so in the next 6 months

contemplation

not exercising regularly but intend to start exercising regularly within the next 6 months

preparation

not exercising regularly but intend to start exercising regularly within the next 30 days

action

now exercising regularly but period is < 6 months

maintenance

exercising regularly for >= 6 months
