Description

A woman who becomes estrogen deficient may develop musculoskeletal complaints.


 

Clinical features:

(1) The patient experiences a new onset or worsening of musculoskeletal complaints (arthralgias, myalgias).

(2) The onset develops after the onset of menopause or within a few weeks of starting an aromatase (estrogen synthetase) inhibitor.

(3) The patient often has other symptoms of estrogen deficiency (hot flashes, etc.).

(4) The symptoms improve with estrogen replacement or discontinuation of aromatase inhibitor.

(5) There is no other explanation for the musculoskeletal complaints.
