Description

A patient receiving an antiretroviral medication may develop serious hypersensitivity reactions. Recognition of allergic symptoms can help alert the patient to the need to stop the medication and contact his or her physician.

Allergic reactions by organ group:

(1) febrile reaction (fever)

(2) dermal (skin rash)

(3) gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache, abdominal pain)

(4) systemic (fatigue, malaise, achiness, myalgias, chills)

(5) respiratory (shortness of breath, cough, sore throat)

For Epzicom (abacavir and lamivudine, Glaxo Smith Kline) the presence of symptoms in 2 or more groups is an indication to stop the medication and contact the physician.

For Ziagen (abacavir, Glaxo Smith Kline) the presence of either a skin rash or symptoms in 2 or more of the remaining groups is an indication to stop the medication and contact the physician.
