Description

Therapy with cisplatin may be associated with anemia due to a deficiency in erythropoietin.

Mechanism: cisplatin-induced damage to the renal tubules, resulting in reduced production of erythropoietin

Clinical features:

(1) onset of anemia during cisplatin therapy

(2) low serum erythropoietin

(3) reversal of anemia and depressed erythropoietin level after discontinuation of cisplatin therapy

Erythopoietin could be administered to correct the anemia if therapy with cisplatin is prolonged or the rebound in endogenous erythropoietin is delayed.
