Description

The fluid produced by the seminal vesicles is rich in fructose, which provides energy for the sperm (and which may help to explain why the prostate is prone chronic prostatitis). Measurement of fructose in the semen can be helpful in evaluating an infertile male.

Interpretation

present

present

expected results OR unilateral defect OR partial bilateral defect

present

absent

bilateral defect in testis and/or between testis and seminal vesicles

absent

present

absence of both seminal vesicles

absent

absent

(bilateral blockage between seminal vesicles and urethra) OR (absence of seminal vesicles AND defect in testis and/or vas deferens)

where:

• Congenital absence of the seminal vesicles may explain the absence of fructose in semen.

• Congenital absence of the vasa deferentia can explain the absence of spermatozoa.
