AMA Criteria for Impairment Associated with Dysfunction of the Vestibulocochlear Nerve (Cranial Nerve VIII)

The level of impairment associated with a disorder of the vestibulocochlear nerve can be estimated based on the AMA criteria.

Parameters:

(1) loss of equilibrium

(2) limitations on activities of daily living and self-care

minimal	only in hazardous surroundings	1 – 9%
mild to moderate	can do simple self-care	10 – 29%
moderate to severe	affects all daily activities, including self-care	30 – 49%
severe	requires assistance with all activities and when walking, may be confined	50-70%
