Description

Exposure to latex in a condom can elicit an allergic reaction in either partner.


 

Clinical findings:

(1) presence of a latex allergy in one or both partners (may be confirmed by skin prick and/or RAST testing)

(2) allergic reaction following exposure to the condom, which may range from minor and local itching or rash to anaphylaxis

(3) absence of reaction if a nonlatex or deproteinised latex condom is used

Differential diagnosis:

(1) allergy to additive on the condom (lubricant, flavor, dyes, etc)

(2) physical abrasion

(3) allergy to seminal fluid
