Description

An alcoholic may develop a psychotic state termed alcoholic hallucinosis.


 

Features of alcoholic hallucinosis:

(1) history of chronic alcohol abuse

(2) auditory hallucinations

(3) variable visual hallucinations

(4) paranoia and fear

(5) exclusion of other causes of psychosis

 

Risk factors:

(1) history of hallucinations during previous withdrawal episode(s)

(2) history of heavy alcohol consumption

 

Conditions that need to be excluded:

(1) withdrawal reaction

(2) pre-existing psychosis with alcohol self-medication

(3) Wernicke's encephalopathy

(4) other types of substance abuse
