Description

Zhang et al identified comorbid conditions in older adults that contribute to repeat admissions for adverse drug reactions (ADRs). These can help to identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive management to reduce this risk. The authors are from the University of Western Australia.

Patient selection: adults >= 60 years of age with 2 or more hospital admission for adverse drug reactions

Comorbid conditions associated with repeat hospital admissions for ADRs:

(1) congestive heart failure (CHF)

(2) chronic pulmonary disease (COPD, other)

(3) rheumatologic disorder

(4) moderate to severe liver disease

(5) diabetes with chronic complications

(6) acute or chronic renal disease

(7) significant malignancy (not minor skin cancer or tumors resected for cure)

(8) metastatic solid tumor

where:

• Conditions were selected if they had an adjusted hazard ratio >= 1.5.

• An organ transplant would also seem to be a risk factor, but these may not have been common in the study population.

Conditions associated with a reduced risk of hospital admission:

(1) dementia

(2) paraplegia
