An electronic cigarette may be associated with a number of acute adverse effects. The long-term consequences are unknown.
Adverse effects:
(1) nicotine poisoning from reservoir (suicide, children, pets)
(2) nicotine dependence
(3) mouth and throat irritation
(4) dry cough
(5) lipoid pneumonia (secondary to glycerol and propylene glycol in vapor)
(6) accidental fire
(7) allergic reactions to additives
(8) other toxic chemicals that vary with device: formaldehyde, nitrosamines, etc
