Description

Adventitial cystic disease (cystic adventitial disease) is a rare disorder of vessels in the arm, pelvis or lower extremity that may mimic peripheral atherosclerosis or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Adventitial cystic disease is a mucinous cyst in the adventitia of an artery or vein with contents similar to that seen in a ganglion cyst.

It may affect:

(1) popliteal artery or vein

(2) femoral artery or vein

(3) iliac artery or vein

(4) short saphenous vein

(5) radial artery or vein

(6) ulnar artery or vein

Most patients are males.

Clinical findings may include:

(1) a palpable cystic mass

(2) intermittent claudication

(3) pain in the calf suggesting a deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

A person may be suspected of having adventitial cystic disease if young and with no risk factors for peripheral artery disease.

Imaging studies show a cystic mass adjacent to the affected artery or vein.
