Description

A patient who was scalded over the back during early childhood may develop scar-related scoliosis during adolescence.

Clinical features:

(1) The patient has a history of scalding over the back during infancy or early childhood.

(2) There is a rapid progression of scoliosis during the adolescent growth spurt.

(3) The convex aspect of the scoliosis curve is the side without scar contracture or with less scarring. A dense band of scarring may cause a "bow string" effect.

(4) There is pelvic obliquity, with the iliac crest higher on the side with the scar contracture.
