Description

A number of signs and symptoms affecting patients with fibromyalgia are not included in the diagnostic criteria of the American College of Rheumatology. Most patients with fibromyalgia will have one or more of these findings, which may contribute significantly to the patient's disease burden.


Signs and Symptoms

Features

neuromuscular

change in muscle tone, numbness and tingling, abnormal muscle twitching, muscle cramps, muscle fasciculations, weakness, headaches, perceptual disturbances, myalgias, low back pain

muscle stiffness

may be greater in the morning and during periods of inactivity, may last for several hours

cognitive

impaired concentration, impaired short term memory, inability to multi-task, impaired performance

fatigue

associated with reduced mental and physical stamina

sleep dysfunction

may include insomnia, frequent awakenings, nocturnal myoclonus and/or restless leg syndrome, nocturnal bruxism

autonomic

may include cardiac arrhythmias, reduced blood pressure, vertigo, vasomotor instability, dizziness, syncope, intolerance or sensitivity to temperature change, respiratory difficulties, changes in bladder and bowel motility, dysmenorrhea in women, erectile dysfunction in males

emotional

reduced tolerance to stress, flattening of affect, anxiety. depression

other

arthralgias, tendinitis, bursitis, chest pain, abdominal pain

 

Treatments targeting these conditions may improve the patient's ability to cope with the fibromyalgia.
