Yamamoto et al reported a severity score for evaluating patients with acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE). The authors are from Nagoya University, Juntendo University and the University of Tokyo.
Patient selection: acute necrotizing encephalopathy
Parameters:
(1) age in months
(2) shock at onset
(3) brainstem lesions
(4) platelet count
(5) CSF protein in mg/dL

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 9
• The higher the score the greater the severity. Severe sequelae can occur with any severity score but deaths were most frequent in a high risk group.
