Description

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has outlined its position on cesarean delivery on maternal request.

Criteria for cesarean delivery on maternal request – both of the following:

(1) The women requests a cesarean section for delivery of a fetus.

(2) There are no maternal or fetal indications for cesarean section.

Recommendations:

(1) Vaginal delivery should be recommended as the preferred method of delivery.

(2) If the woman is concerned about pain then the focus should be on effective pain control during delivery.

(3) An elective cesarean delivery should not take place before a gestational age of 39 weeks.

Relative contraindication:

(1) The woman wants several children (due to the risk of complications following multiple cesareran sections).
