Description

Accelerated silicosis is a form of silicosis with features between those of the acute and chronic forms. Early diagnosis is important as the condition tends to progress if there is continued exposure.

Clinical features:

(1) The patient has a history of exposure to silica, usually occupational.

(2) The patient presents with dyspnea and fever.

(3) Progression to cor pulmonale (with or without clubbing) is more rapid than with chronic silicosis, over the course of a few years.

Imaging studies shows a nodular pattern which rapidly progressive fibrosis.

This is uncommon with proper airway protection. It may be encountered if respiratory use is not enforced or if the worker is in a developing country where respirators are not available or are rudimentary.

The presence of smoking and tuberculosis may contribute to further declines in respiratory function.
