ABCDE is a mneumonic based on the starting letter of the intervention. The subsequent list dispenses with the reference to these letters.

 

Steps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease:

(1) being aware of and watching for the signs and symptoms of cardiovascular disease

(2) aspirin therapy if appropriate

(3) ankle-brachial index at baseline and for monitoring for peripheral arterial disease

(4) control of blood pressure

(5) exercise

(6) stopping any tobacco use

(7) detection and management of lipid disorders, including control of serum cholesterol

(8) detection and management of diabetes mellitus

(9) diet and weight management
