Description

Myers et al reported the 5-variable MELD score (5vMELD). This can help to predict mortality for a patient on the waiting list for liver transplant. The authors are from the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

Patient selection: candidate for liver transplant

Parameters:

(1) MELDNa score (with sodium allowed range from 125 to 140 mmol/L)

(2) serum albumin in g/dL (allowed range 1.0 to 4.0)

5vMELD score =

= (MELDNa) + (5.275 * (4 - (albumin)) - (0.136 * (MELDNa) * (4 - (albumin)))

Interpretation:

• minimum 5vMELD: around 6

• maximum 5vMELD: around 40

• The higher the 5vMELD the greater the risk for the patient on a liver transplant waiting list.
